Our SQL servers get a RAM boost Posted on July 15th, 2008 by

Yesterday, we doubled the RAM in our SQL servers (bringing them up to 16GB each) so they can continue to be screaming-fast for the next few years as we expand our services on the web.

For the technologically curious

We have a failover cluster just in case one machine fails or needs updates–this allows us to provide a consistent level of high availability. And, here are some of the specs:

  • Two Dell PowerEdge 1950
  • Two dual core 3GHz processors with 4MB L2 cache
  • 16GB RAM
  • Two 1Gb Ethernet cards
  • One 100Mb Ethernet card
  • 250GB hard drive (for operating system and local backups)
  • 64-bit operating system and 64-bit SQL server

Our SQL data are located on two LeftHand boxes. Each machine has 300GB of space partitioned for SQL data (the rest is used for other things). These two boxes are mirrored on two identical machines located in another building for additonal physical security.
